I once had a group of people I was playing 5E with ask me to run them through a tough “old school” adventure.

Politely, I explained it was pretty different from what they played. They puffed out their chests, and told me they want to take on Tomb of Horrors. I was gobsmacked. I said heck no, that is not for you. They begged and begged. I said, ok, roll up a character and I will bring a bunch of pregens with me.

The next week, I take them through. The first argument started when they got mad their “passive perception” wasnt automatically picking up on the traps and secret doors. This is where I saw such a huge difference. I told them I need them to tell me what they’re doing, where they’re looking, all of that. It was a mess.

Then the party thief decided to jump into the great mouth. I held my breath. Then one by one they all followed him in. I said well, here pick out some pregens and we can start over. When they found out they were dead with no saving throws, they decided they didnt want to play anymore. I just shook my head.
