Shotokan is a style of karate that originated in Japan. The term "Shotokan" is derived from two Japanese words: "Shoto" and "kan."
"Shoto" is the pen name used by Gichin Funakoshi, the founder of Shotokan karate. It means "pine waves" or "pine breeze" and was chosen by Funakoshi to represent his deep connection to nature.
"Kan" translates to "house" or "training hall" in Japanese. So "Shotokan" can be understood as "Shoto's house" or "the training hall of Shoto."
Shotokan karate is characterized by its strong stances, linear techniques, and emphasis on powerful strikes. It places great importance on kata, which are prearranged sequences of movements that simulate combat situations. Shotokan practitioners also focus on kihon (basic techniques), kumite (sparring), and various physical and mental training methods.
Today, Shotokan karate is one of the most widely practised styles of karate worldwide and has influenced the development of many other martial arts styles.
