Fiona, Tracy, Oakley, and Rex recently returned from a huge week of surveying in the Sturt Stony Desert, SA. It was a great initial deployment with @TeamKowari & @Sydney_Uni that provided a promising insight into how conservation detection dogs can assist with kowari research.
There's something magical about a Rare Books Room. Here's an 1894 expedition report where Europeans first met kowaris (awesome carnivorous #marsupials). Zoologist Baldwin Spencer credits a telegraph operator for his specimens, but in truth they were collected by Aboriginal women.
SA Arid Lands Landscape Board’s Across the Outback e-newsletter about our kowari deployment last month and the collaborative efforts into researching this threatened species.

Kowari and little red kaluta are two more tiny favourites. Who will you nominate in the Australian Mammal of the Year? #AusMammalOfTheYear

❓ Can you tell the difference? ❓
In the lead up to our @TeamKowari deployment we’ve been doing some scent discrimination training with rat scat.
Kowari & rat scats looks very similar. Lucky for us though, Rex and Oakley’s noses can tell the difference!
