Today is Day 12 of my tribute to our Founding Fathers in honor of the USA’s 250th birthday.

Roger Sherman, born in 1721, is one of the most underrated but important Founding Fathers.

Born to a poor farming family in Massachusetts, Sherman had almost no formal education. He taught himself law, became a successful lawyer, merchant, and surveyor, and eventually served in high office.

At the 1787 Constitutional Convention, Sherman proposed the Connecticut Compromise (also called the Great Compromise). It created a bicameral legislature — the House based on population and the Senate with equal state representation. This saved the Convention from collapsing and is still the foundation of Congress today.

Sherman is the only person to have signed all four of America’s great founding documents:
• Declaration of Independence
• Articles of Confederation
• U.S. Constitution
• Bill of Rights

Unlike flashy orators like Patrick Henry, Sherman was plain-spoken, deeply religious (a devout Congregationalist), and known for his common sense and integrity.

Though not a famous “renaissance man” like Thomas Jefferson, Sherman was multi-talented. He was a shoemaker early in life, then a lawyer, judge, mayor of New Haven, and treasurer of Yale College. He also published almanacs and wrote on astronomy and mathematics.

He’s a great example of the practical, hardworking Founders who got things done without seeking the spotlight.

Sherman served in the Continental Congress, U.S. House, and U.S. Senate.

He died in 1793 at age 72, after a short illness, likely typhoid fever or a similar infectious disease.
