Today, we celebrate St. Louis labor activist and equal rights champion, Ora Lee Malone. Malone was a fearless fighter who spent more than fifty years working to advance the rights of women, Black people, and low-wage workers.
From fighting for voting rights in the segregated south, to labor organizing in St. Louis, and eventually joining Nelson Mandela’s campaign against apartheid in South Africa, Malone spent her life bringing people together to fight for a future where all people’s rights are protected.
Malone also played an essential role in the founding of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists, the Coalition of Labor Union Women, and many other labor organizations. Her legacy as an organizer and an advocate lives on here in St. Louis as we keep the fight for justice alive.
