This afternoon I have had a meeting with members of the Makerere University Convocation at the PLU Secretariat.
They also picked books for Endorsement of Gen @mkainerugaba for Presidency 2031.
Today, I had the pleasure of welcoming Lord Krish Raval of the UK House of Lords and his team to Parliament.
He was accompanied by his adviser, Mr. Rajesh Shah, and our High Commissioner in London, H.E Nimisha Madhvani.
I was joined by my colleagues Hon. Agnes Khainza, Hon. Fiona Nakku, Hon. Julius Acon Bua and Hon. Peter Kiti. This was a special meeting for me for two reasons:
First, Lord Raval is a son of Uganda, of Asian origin, whose family left during the painful expulsion of 1972.
I reminded him that during Idi Amin's time, Uganda went about eight years without a Parliament, and so much went wrong, including the seizure of Asian properties.
I am proud that President Yoweri Museveni’s government returned those properties. Through the Custodian Board, anyone still tracing their property can recover it without question.
I also walked our guests through what makes our Parliament unique. Directly elected MPs sit alongside representatives of women, youth, persons with disabilities, workers, older persons and the army. Our army MPs are a listening post. I have not encountered this kind of arrangement anywhere. Ours is truly one of a kind and presiding over a House of so many interests is a blessing.
Second, as parliament, we have taken parliamentary diplomacy beyond traditional diplomacy to build synergies to enrich our legislative mandate and support the development agenda of the nation.
We have made a deliberate choice to build strategic partnerships with four countries, and the UK is one of them. Our history binds us. We cannot abandon the UK, and the UK cannot abandon us.
I therefore told Lord Raval that parliamentary diplomacy should complement traditional diplomacy and deliver real results for our people.
I told Lord Raval we wish to see business, trade, ideas and resources flowing between our two countries. If there are any barriers to UK investment in Uganda, this Parliament is ready to remove them through a friendly legal regime.
Lord Raval made an important point that I fully share. Investors look for a stable political system and a strong rule of law, and parliamentarians are at the heart of safeguarding both, especially the 12thParliament.
I gave Lord Raval a gift pack of Arabica coffee from the slopes of Mt Elgon in Bugisu, Eastern Region.
It is some of the finest coffee in the world, grown by our hardworking farmers.
I hope every cup reminds him that the door to his motherland is always open.
It's a beautiful day full of expectations and as an ambitious African man, I decided to smile because it's very good for your mental health. #mentalhealth#youth@AsasiraLeticia indeed I'm enjoying the comfort of @movit_ug thank you again for helping me out.
