Statement:

HENCHEM is the distributor of pest control products including fumigation products for the professional fumigation industry.

“One of our customer’s service vehicle was hijacked last week on the Marlboro offramp in Johannesburg, Gauteng.

“On the vehicle was various specialised fumigation equipment including a steel cylinder with a highly toxic odourless fumigant.

“The product ProFume is a highly regulated fumigation gas which is used for the fumigation of commodities (such as grain) and structures (for wood destroying pests).

“Profume can only be purchased and used by qualified and certified fumigators that completed specialised stewardship training and safety gas monitoring equipment in possession of.

“We have already informed all fumigators through industry bodies, such as SAPCA (South African Pest Control Association), DALLRD (Department of Agriculture Land reform) Inspectorate, Grifton Poison Centre, the manufacturer and the Grifton poison centre.

“The incident was reported at the Sandton police station and they have under taken to distribute the photo of the cylinder to other police stations.

“All ProFume cylinders are highly regulated and each cylinder has an unique tracking number which is booked out on to a registered users profile. Empty cylinders must be returned to us after use. If the thieves attempt to sell the stolen cylinder back to users in the fumigation industry, we will pick it up if the empty stolen cylinder is returned to us. Even the gas monitoring equipment has unique serial numbers which we will pick up if the equipment is sent back to us for calibration.

“Our concern is that the stolen cylinder will be dumped next to a road or on a dumpsite or sold to a scrap metal contractor. If this cylinder is opened to release the content, innocent people can die.

“This stolen cylinder must therefore be retrieved at all cost and we urge the public to assist to report any possible sightings of this cylinder or equipment.
