Another episode of #TheWest airs tonight on the @HISTORY channel.
Honored to be bringing you these stories with the help of the brilliant historian @DorisKGoodwin
For Kevin Costner, deciding to raise dogs was never simply about having pets around the house. It came from something quieter and more personal. After years spent moving through the exhausting rhythm of Hollywood film sets, interviews, pressure, and constant public attention, Kevin seemed drawn toward the kind of companionship that asks for nothing except honesty. Dogs gave him that.
There is a loneliness that can exist even inside a successful life. Fame surrounds people constantly, yet often leaves very little room for trust that feels simple and real. Dogs do not care about celebrity, reputation, or achievement. They do not measure success or failure. And perhaps that is exactly what Kevin needed most a presence untouched by the noise of the outside world.
People close to Kevin Costner have often described how naturally calm he becomes around animals. Long walks outdoors, quiet mornings at home, sitting silently beside a dog after difficult days those moments grounded him emotionally in ways fame never could. Dogs brought routine, peace, and a kind of emotional steadiness that human relationships sometimes struggle to provide.
Kevin once reflected that animals teach people how to love without complication. That truth seems deeply connected to why dogs became so important in his life. They offered loyalty without conditions, affection without expectation, and comfort without needing explanations. In a world where people constantly wanted something from him attention, performances, interviews, decisions dogs simply wanted him present.
There is also something deeply fitting about someone like Kevin Costner loving dogs so deeply. Much of his life has been shaped by reflection, nature, family, and emotional sincerity. Dogs naturally belong in that world. They slow life down. They remind people to pay attention to ordinary moments sunlight through trees, quiet companionship, a familiar presence waiting at the door after long days away.
Over time, those animals became more than companions to Kevin. They became emotional witnesses to different chapters of his life the joyful years, the difficult ones, the lonely moments no audience ever saw. Anyone who has truly loved a dog understands that eventually they stop feeling like pets. They become part of the emotional structure of your life itself.
My dream was always to show @Horizonsaga Chapter 2 at the Venice Film Festival. The fact that now they have decided to show Chapter 1 earlier in the day and then the World Premiere of Chapter 2 that evening shows not only their belief in how the two films work together but their support of a director’s vision.
I’m indebted to Alberto Barbera for his courage and leadership in committing to this cinematic journey. It is with gratitude and excitement that I return to the Venice Film Festival.
Long live the movies and those willing to stand for them.
