**Why data centers still don’t work in space**
Everyone loves the idea: unlimited solar power, no land fights, no water shortages, and compute floating above the planet. Sounds perfect for the AI boom. Reality is much harsher.

**Cooling is the real deal-breaker.**
On Earth we just blow air or pump liquid past hot chips. In the vacuum of space those options vanish. The only way to get rid of heat is to radiate it away as infrared light. That process is painfully inefficient. A single modern AI rack can need hundreds of square meters of radiator panels just to stay cool enough to function. Raise the temperature to make radiation more effective and the chips start leaking current, slowing down, and dying faster. Space is cold, but it is also an almost perfect insulator. That contradiction kills the dream at scale.

**Radiation is relentless.**
Above the atmosphere, cosmic rays and solar particles constantly slam into electronics. They flip bits, corrupt data, and slowly destroy silicon. Radiation-hardened chips exist, but they are years behind commercial GPUs in performance and density. Running today’s advanced AI hardware unprotected is basically suicide for the hardware. Heavy shielding or triple redundancy multiplies mass, power draw, and heat — making the cooling problem even worse.

**Power and mass explode.**
Yes, the sun is free. But generating continuous megawatts requires enormous solar arrays. Low Earth orbit has eclipses every 90 minutes, so you need heavy batteries. The combination of solar wings + radiators + shielding turns every kilowatt of compute into a massive structure that has to be launched from Earth. Launch costs are falling, but not fast enough. Current economics still lose badly to a data center sitting next to a power plant in Virginia or Texas.

**Maintenance is nearly impossible.**
On the ground a failed server gets swapped in minutes. In orbit you either live with degraded performance or wait for expensive robotic servicing that barely exists yet. AI chips improve every 12–18 months. Orbital hardware risks becoming obsolete long before the satellite dies. Failures also create more space debris in already crowded orbits.

None of this means orbital compute is impossible forever. Small, specialized systems for processing satellite data or certain national-security workloads could make sense. Lightweight radiators, better error correction, cheaper launches, and in-space servicing might eventually change the math. But turning space into the new home for hyperscale AI data centers? That remains science fiction for now.

The physics is not on our side yet.
