“No amount of dams built in Ethiopia will hurt Egypt or Sudan”: Meles Zenawi
Today marks 14 years since the passing of #Ethiopia’s late Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. His words on the Nile are worth replaying as #Egypt renews its warnings alleging Ethiopia “plans to control the flows of the Nile River to downstream countries” by building more dams.
Meles was the leader who envisioned and mobilized Ethiopia’s signature, self-financed national project, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (#GERD), initially advanced under the name “Project X” before its official launch.
Speaking to Egyptian media shortly before his death, Meles argued that additional dams in Ethiopia would not threaten downstream countries.
“On the contrary, if dams are built in Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan will benefit.”

@AbiyAhmedAli If only coastal states manage the Red Sea, then logically only upstream nations contributing water to the Nile should control its utilization.
@AbiyAhmedAli 800 million seedlings. 1 day. 1 united nation! 🇪🇹 This is the monumental power of the Green Legacy. Inspiring leadership by PM Abiy Ahmed and an incredible milestone for the world! Let's make history! 🚀🌱 #GreenLegacy

@MAERomania@MFAEthiopia Thank you for the National Day wishes, @MAERomania! 🇷🇴🤝🇪🇹
A gentle note: historically uncolonized, Ethiopia celebrates National Day (May 28) & Adwa Victory Day (March 2), not Independence Day.
We value your friendship & look forward to stronger bilateral cooperation! ✨
@AsstSecStateAF Fascinating how the narrative shifts. SAF blames Ethiopia for external drone incursions, but when the smoke clears in Kordofan, the US points the finger right back at SAF for striking markets innocent civilians pay the price. The cycle has to break. #SudanNews#HornOf Africa
@TiborPNagyJr Excellent point, sir. Solving internal challenges is indeed the key to unlocking Ethiopia's true, exponential potential on the global stage. Thank you for always providing such clear, critical insight.
@AbiyAhmedAli 🇪🇹✨ Ethiopia Always Will!
PM Abiy Ahmed’s gift to the UN radiates strength, unity & legacy. A proud symbol of peace that echoes across generations. 🌍🔥

@AbiyAhmedAli@KGeorgieva Great to see Ethiopia engaging directly with z IMF on shared priorities & economic progress 🌍🤝. But the reality remains — managing over $51 billion debt isn’t easy 4 a developing nation striving to uplift its people. Hope this dialogue brings fair, sustainable solutions 4all.
@AbiyAhmedAli From hazard to haven 🌍✨ — this rebirth of Arada shows what vision + action can achieve! A true beacon of resilience and promise for Ethiopia 🇪🇹🔥 #UrbanSanctuary#FutureBuiltToday
@_hudsonc Very sharp perspective. The idea of UAE acting as an ‘activist investor’ in Africa is especially interesting — it explains a lot about current dynamics.
@fanatelevision Leadership built on trust creates partnerships that shape the future. 🇪🇹🤝🇦🇪 Strategic cooperation between Ethiopia and the UAE is a powerful example of diplomacy driving stability, investment, and opportunity for the region.
@AbiyAhmedAli@MohamedBinZayed Strong partnerships built on trust create stability and opportunity. Wishing Ethiopia and the UAE continued success in this cooperation. 👍
