Nvidia and researchers at Germany's Jülich Supercomputing Centre used 8,192 GPUs to simulate a 104-qubit process for fault-tolerant quantum computing on JUPITER, Europe's first exascale supercomputer, in what Nvidia calls the largest comprehensive simulation of a fault-tolerant quantum processor to date.

The work modeled coherent phase errors and leakage rather than ideal conditions, and Nvidia claims the approach could cut the physical qubits needed to produce magic states by up to 90%, though fewer qubits may also mean slower state production.

This week's IT funding roundup covers five deals spanning cloud financing, processor development, GPU software, traffic security and continuous integration, from Nebius's $3.5 billion credit facility down to Blacksmith's $66 million Series C.

The common question across all of them is how much of that new capital will translate into usable capacity and dependable operations rather than just bigger balance sheets.

Google has agreed with Voltus to build a virtual power plant providing up to 1,070 megawatts of capacity in the PJM market, making it one of the largest such agreements involving a hyperscaler.

Unlike a conventional plant, it coordinates energy usage across thousands of businesses and households, cutting consumption at peak demand to free up capacity, though it remains an open question whether these networks can scale fast enough to keep pace with the data center buildout.

For decades the golden rule of data center development was proximity to internet hubs, low taxes, cheap electricity and friendly local zoning, and the explosive rise of energy-hungry AI is rewriting that playbook, forcing tech giants to prioritize two scarce resources: available power and receptive neighbors.

Data centers now account for more than half the forecasted U.S. electricity demand growth over the next five years, and as "not in my backyard" sentiment grows, the race for AI dominance will no longer be won by whoever offers the biggest tax break.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang used GTC Berlin to outline an ambitious expansion of the chipmaker's European AI strategy, unveiling new infrastructure designs, agent security technology and partnerships that push the company beyond GPUs into the systems enterprises need to deploy AI at scale.

Big picture: some of that technology won't arrive until early 2027, the performance claims still need validating in real-world use, and for European customers the open question is whether they can expand adoption and keep data sovereignty without deepening dependence on a single tech giant.

The chairman and CEO of Everpure said today it's only a matter of time before IT architects must revisit how data is stored across the enterprise, because multiple copies of the same data sets create conflicting versions, and whenever an AI agent encounters those, the chances its output will be flawed only increase.

Resolving that will require a data plane through which data becomes accessible to any application or AI agent, and as Giancarlo puts it, the relationship between data and the application needs to be inverted.

Boomi has acquired Israeli data observability startup Elementary Data for a reported $45 million, extending its platform beyond connecting applications into verifying the data AI agents act on.

A Forrester study Boomi commissioned found 86% of organizations have moved past agent pilots but only 34% trust the actions their agents take, and 77% of the least-ready ones are pushing into production anyway.

Russia and Ukraine have escalated attacks on each other's data centers, turning commercial computing infrastructure into military targets alongside power plants and refineries.

Ukrainian drones damaged three Yandex facilities and hit infrastructure tied to Sberbank, knocking out digital wallets, ride-hailing and cloud services for more than 50,000 businesses, while Yandex's three NVIDIA A100 supercomputers are hard to replace under Western sanctions.

A Red Hat engineering director bought a negative scanner that no longer supported Linux, so he turned Claude Code loose on the problem and had a recognizable scan working within hours and a near-perfect driver days later.

The human still decides what to build and checks it on real hardware, but the slog of reverse-engineering undocumented drivers shrinks a lot, which makes this a genuine game changer for Linux desktop device developers.

Every new class of workload arrives with the claim that it's too performance-sensitive for a virtual machine, and AI on GPUs is just the latest, yet the overhead usually lands under 2% because the hypervisor isn't doing arithmetic in the data path.

The real cost of bare metal was always operational, and with most customers running GPUs below 50% utilization, virtualization gives you live migration and GPU sharing for a couple of percent, which is the same trade we made for databases years ago.

Residents of a Pennsylvania township are still opposing a massive data center despite NorthPoint Development's offer of $10,000 per eligible household as part of a $165 million community benefits package for a hyperscale campus linked to AWS, with about 17% of residents living below the poverty line yet many arguing the payments would not cover property value declines, higher electricity costs and environmental damage.

The payments would be limited to Hazle Township households while neighbors in Hazleton and Sugarloaf get nothing, and the standoff is part of a trend that saw local resistance disrupt at least 75 data center projects worth roughly $130 billion in the first quarter of 2026.

Gartner projects that more than 80% of neocloud providers will cease independent operations by 2030, as the gap between massive capital expenditures and actual AI revenue leaves over $3.5 trillion exposed to impairment risk.

To justify announced spending and hit a standard 12% return on invested capital, AI data center owners would need $8.5 trillion in cumulative revenue through 2030, yet Gartner expects actual attributable AI revenues to reach no more than $3.6 trillion.

Nscale is racing toward a $35 billion IPO while its flagship site just north of the Arctic Circle runs six months late after cooling leaks, regulatory hurdles and an on-site fire, with only 6.4 MW of a planned 30 MW operational and a three-story floating hotel towed in to house the construction crews.

In Essex, the site billed as the UK's largest AI supercomputer was still a scaffolding yard in March and now needs 90 MW, one of 315 data centers stuck in Ofgem's connection queue representing 73 GW of demand against a national capacity of 45 GW.

Large electricity customers, primarily data centers, have requested more than 700 gigawatts of power across major sections of the U.S., more than 10 times what data centers currently consume, and only about 23% of those disclosed requests qualify as high-confidence projects.

Developers often submit requests to several utilities while evaluating sites, so a single planned data center can appear multiple times in regional forecasts, and Exelon's high-probability pipeline fell from 18 gigawatts to 11 once it started requiring financial commitments and collateral.
