@lady_valor_07 Who is “we”? You and your dinner guest? How many people in the party. If the total bill was $500 and no gratuity was already on the bill, then $40 might be okay for you and an another person. But a $500 bill should be a minimum $100 tip if the service was good.

And most of the time they do. Look up “tipping in America” educate yourself. Also obvious you never worked in food service.
