THIS WEEKEND: Highway Closure on I-680 at the Mission San Jose (SR-238) Overpass for Bridge Rehabilitation Project and Additional Local Street Closure at Old Canyon Road in Fremont on the Weekend of August 8, 2025
ADDITIONAL LOCAL STREET CLOSURE: OLD CANYON ROAD
Old Canyon Road will be closed at the intersection of Niles Canyon Road starting Friday, August 8 at 3:00 PM until Monday, August 11 at 5:00 AM. With the planned closure of northbound I-680 at the Mission Blvd North interchange for the weekend of August 8-11, the City anticipates heavy traffic along the Caltrans detour route of Mission Boulevard and Niles Canyon Road. To help deter freeway traffic entering local residential roadways, Old Canyon Road at the intersection of Niles Canyon Road will be closed. Please be mindful, as navigation apps may direct some motorists onto local residential roadways to bypass the Mission Blvd Boulevard corridor.
While the City recognizes the I-680 closure will be an inconvenience to nearby residents, this additional road closure aims to provide relief to local residents near Mission Boulevard. The City will report this roadway closure to navigation apps and monitor traffic throughout the weekend. We recognize how disruptive the closure will be and have learned from other cities during previous closures that these smaller measures could help lessen the impact from traffic apps.
NORTHBOUND I-680 FULL HIGHWAY CLOSURE:
A segment of NB I-680 will be closed and traffic will be detoured through the Mission Blvd/SR-238 Off Ramp towards Eastbound SR-84. Closures will start Friday August 8 at 10:00 PM and conclude on the following Monday August 11 at 5:00 AM.
NORTHBOUND I-680 DETOUR:
Motorists traveling northbound on I-680 will need to exit right onto Mission Blvd/SR-238 Off-Ramp; Left towards NB Mission Blvd/SR-238; Continue on Mission Blvd/SR-238; Make a right onto Niles Canyon Rd (SR-84) and continue; Right onto NB I-680/SR-84 On-Ramp; Merge and continue onto NB I-680 towards Sacramento.

The City is pleased that the labor dispute and related work stoppage between Republic Services and the Teamsters has concluded. We acknowledge how challenging this has been for our residents and businesses, and we thank the community for their patience.
We extend our gratitude to the Fremont Recycling and Transfer Station for accepting waste drop-offs. Their partnership was instrumental under such constrained conditions.
We also wish to recognize the exceptional efforts of City staff who worked around the clock to monitor developments, advocate for supplemental service, provide timely public updates, and develop contingency plans. Their unwavering dedication, professionalism, and commitment to serving the community were critical.
The City will conduct a comprehensive review of this service disruption in order to identify opportunities for increased service reliability moving forward.
Waste Collection Service Alert Update for July 18, 2025
The waste collection service disruption from Republic Services is over. The City of Fremont is providing this update to keep our community informed.
– The Republic Services work stoppage is over. Teamster drivers will resume their duties tomorrow, Saturday, July 19.
– All trucks and collection routes will be operating tomorrow, Saturday, July 19.
– Tomorrow, Saturday, July 19, residential collection service will focus on reported missed garbage pickups (black carts) from prior days plus recycling carts (blue carts) and organics/yardwaste carts (green carts) from Wednesday through Friday customers.
– Starting Monday, July 21, all three waste carts will be collected on normal scheduled day of service.
– Tomorrow, Saturday, July 19, commercial collection service will focus on reported missed pickups and usual Monday customers.

Today, Saturday, July 12, Republic Services continued reduced residential collection in Fremont using substitute drivers. Additional substitute drivers will arrive tomorrow, Sunday, and Republic Services will work throughout Sunday to remove TRASH.
You may have received an automated call from Republic Services requesting that all the carts are set out at the curb. Only the black garbage carts will be picked up on Sunday.
The Tuesday (July 8) route has been mostly completed, with the Wednesday (July 9) route to begin on Sunday.
Drivers are prioritizing the collection of black garbage carts, since such waste impacts public health.
Green organics/yardwaste carts and blue recycling carts will continue to be delayed at this point. The City has no further information on when recycling and organics/yardwaste carts will be collected.

Late today, the City was informed by Republic Services that the company will be restoring most residential collection in Fremont beginning tomorrow, Friday afternoon. Substitute drivers will be working through the service backlog and operating throughout this weekend on Saturday and Sunday, starting with customers whose collection day was on Tuesday of this week.
As the City pursues available remedies and contractual obligations—we invite our community to join us in preserving the health, safety, and livability of our neighborhoods.
· Limit waste generation where possible—avoid disposable items, flatten cardboard and excess packaging.
· Compost food scraps. This reduces odor and volume in your trash.
· Secure trash bags tightly and store them in covered bins or containers to prevent pests and odors. Consider double or triple-bagging potentially smelly items such as pet waste. Reuse old plastic bags you may have on hand.
· Choose products with less packaging. Consider purchasing products in bulk, if you know you will use up the entire contents.
