Titanic director and diving expert James Cameron believes the OceanGates’ Titan submersible imploded underwater because it was not constructed out of the proper materials.

Cameron is an expert at diving and submersibles, as well as an award winning director. During an interview with ABC News and The New York Times, after the debris of the vessel had been discovered on the ocean floor, he said:

“I’ve been down there many times. I know the wreck site very well. I’ve made 33 dives, and I actually calculated that I spent more time on the ship than the captain did back in the day.”

As a submersible designer myself, I designed and built a sub to go to the deepest place in the ocean - three times deeper than Titanic. So I understand the engineering problems associated with building this type of vehicle and all the safety protocols that you have to go through.”

Cameron said there has never been fatalities of this kind in similar underwater explorations and that the Titan imploded because it was made out of carbon fiber. Carbon fiber is stronger and lighter than steel or aluminum, yet has “no strength in compression”.

Mr. Cameron strongly criticized Stockton Rush, the OceanGate chief executive who piloted the submersible when it disappeared Sunday, for never getting his tourist submersible certified as safe. He noted that Mr. Rush called certification an impediment to innovation.

“I agree in principle,” Mr. Cameron said. “But you can’t take that stance when you’re putting paying customers into your submersible — when you have innocent guests who trust you and your statements" about vehicle safety.
