This issue has lingered in the public space for far too long, and people are rightfully starting to ask the hard questions. Why has Akanbi not been granted bail? What is truly behind this agonising delay? Justice should not only be done, but it must be seen to be done.

It has been confirmed that this man is gravely ill and his bail application is sitting right before the judge, meeting every single legal requirement, yet it remains frozen.

Insisting on keeping a sick man in custody is no longer just a legal oversight, it is beginning to confirm the worst fears of the public, including the protesters who brought banners to the court, that this appears like a calculated script, not a judicial process.

​Hopefully, the court will do the needful, as his lawyers argued in the video. However, with growing public concern and the protest banners seen around the court premises just yesterday, the atmosphere is thick with suspicion that dark external interests are pulling the strings behind the scenes, driving the crowd to shout that Justice A.T. Muyideen is compromised.

Legal professionals must be protective of their reputations, history is a brutal judge, and it does not forget in a hurry. You can't allow yourself to be used as a pawn by powerful figures who will dump you once the damage is done.

So, on this matter, the judiciary needs to reassure the public that this case is being handled strictly based on law and evidence, not external pressure, as suggested by some civil society groups, or personal sentiment. Because right now, it is becoming obvious that this case has developed a serious k-leg.
