Well, history does repeat itself. Last year, Mississippi State lost to Southern Miss 0-3 on the road in a frustrating loss, then proceeded to run-rule them a few weeks later at home, 18-3.
Earlier this season, it was closer (6-7) at Pete Taylor Park but still frustrating, and tonight, another MSU run-rule win at Dudy Noble Field, 12-0 in 7 innings. State improves to 21-4, USM is now 19-6.
The State pitching was spread out among seven pitchers, with only starter Chris Billingsley logging more than four outs, going the first two innings. He gave way to winning pitcher Jack Bauer, followed by Jack Gleason, Parker Rhodes, Dane Burns, Maddox Webb, and Maddox Miller.
Their work was made easier by the State offense which recorded 12 straight scoring innings, including all seven in Sunday's 17-7 run-rule win over Vanderbilt. The streak ended when James Nunnallee's bid for a home run to center field was caught on the warning track in the 6th inning.
Overall, the Bulldogs pounded out 14 hits, led by four from Aidan Teel, two each from Gehrig Frei and Ryder Woodson. Teel also had a home run, as did SEC Freshman of the Week Jacob Parker.
State now goes from the rival down south to the rival up north, traveling to Ole Miss for an SEC series Friday-Sunday.
Comments from Teel and Billingsley are below. Comments from Coach Oak have already been published in a separate post.
Most players think showing up to practice is enough. It’s not.
In-season is when the real separation happens—the extra reps, the early work, the late nights. That’s what turns good into great! Great players don’t wait for practice…they create it💪
Everyone will try to tell you what you should do.
Very few will ask what you actually want.
Had a great talk with a high school player figuring it out… and staying true to himself. That’s what matters most. 💯⚾️
