We know the news is scary and distressing for us all at the moment.
We wanted to share some resources to support children and young people's mental health during this time and to support the adults around them to have difficult conversations about world news.

Taking risks is how humankind developed.
Teen brains are wired to try risky behaviours!
Don’t blame yourself, know it will end, pick them up on it when they are ready to listen.
It’s normal and healthy but highly frustrating we know!

My first book is 99p on Kindle for just a few more days - it goes back to full price in Oct. Please share if you know others who might benefit.

Teens ‘blow up’ often!
Emotional brain is in charge!
Reasoning calm brain is forming but doesn’t yet exist.
The ‘blow ups’ are the pathways forming, they can’t think through an issue in an ‘adult’ or reasoned way! They explode at us instead!

On October 5th, Year 11 will be taken off timetable to experience life as an MRC Sixth Former. Own clothes, use of the common room and brand new subjects!
It could be..
Evolution
Culture
Independence practice
Or
Just what it is!!
But the teen brain is evolving and they will react on emotion - “GET OUT OF MY ROOM/LIFE” rather than with reason!
Be patient and wait until that emotion has settled down!

It's okay to...
feel upset
miss someone
have a bad day
make mistakes
feel how you feel
not be happy all the time
have days when you doubt yourself
What else would you add?
So the part of the teenage brain responsible for…
Planning, problem solving, decision making and social interaction…..
Is still under construction!!
Know their brains are forming the pathways, just a bit slower than you’d like im sure!!

Teenage brains are transforming, suddenly you feel you don’t know your child!
During the change… teens use the amygdala in the brain to think & respond
Adult brains develop to use the pre-frontal cortex (the reasoning part of the brain)
The 2 parts are trying to join….
Explore what to expect of life at MRC by joining us at our Open Evening on Wed 20 Sept from 6.00-8.00pm.
As well as an excellent education, other opportunities include Music/Drama performances, residential visits in Europe and further afield plus extensive enrichment offers.
Make schools more rigid. Insist that children stop playing years before they are ready for it. Impose a one size fits all system on everyone - and when it doesn't work for an increasing number, say that they are the problem, not the system. https://t.co/tiH0D3y4aw
Did your teen ‘change’ this summer!!
Common... “We don’t know what’s happened but he/she has changed, they’ve been a right pain all summer”!
Don’t worry- happening to lots of us!
The ‘change’ is their brain developing… it happened to us all!!
Let us guide you! #teenagebrain
Teens and exams
1 day a time for us and for them.
Yes timetables and key words up on commonly used doors… bathrooms, fridge etc, might make an impact, might not!
Remain calm, it’ll be ok!
Adding stress to them won’t make them study more- it’ll just cause stress #teenbrain
