1498: Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama reached Calicut, India, becoming the first European to reach the subcontinent via the ocean.

1881: The American Red Cross was founded by Clara Barton in Washington, D.C.

1927: Charles Lindbergh landed the Spirit of St. Louis in Paris, completing the first-ever solo non-stop transatlantic flight.

1932: Five years after Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, landing in Northern Ireland.

1991: Former Indian Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated in a suicide bombing near Madras, India
