On 17th April, Regional Maritime University undertook an educational industrial visit to Tema Oil Refinery (TOR), reinforcing the institution’s commitment to bridging academic learning with practical industry exposure.
The delegation comprised 18 students and a lecturer, representing diverse academic levels (Level 100 to Level 400) and disciplines, predominantly engineering, with a blend of ports and logistics studies. The group arrived at the refinery at approximately 9:30 a.m.
Upon arrival, the Public Affairs Department warmly received the students and ushered them to the training centre for an introductory session. The presentation provided a comprehensive overview of TOR’s operations, structure, and strategic role within Ghana’s energy sector, setting the stage for a deeper engagement.
A key highlight of the visit was a safety briefing delivered by the Safety Manager, who emphasized the refinery’s strict adherence to safety protocols, policies, and best practices. The session underscored the critical importance of safety in ensuring operational efficiency and protecting both personnel and assets.
The engagement continued with a detailed technical presentation by the Morning Shift Manager, offering insights into refinery processes and operations. This was followed by a guided tour of key operational areas, including the utilities section, control room, powerhouse, Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracking (RFCC) unit, and Crude Distillation Unit (CDU). Managers at each unit provided in-depth explanations of their processes, giving students firsthand exposure to real-time industrial operations.
The visit served as a valuable learning experience, effectively integrating classroom knowledge with practical industry application, and inspiring the next generation of professionals in the energy and maritime sectors.

As we continue our recovery and repositioning journey, the refinery’s participation in the 2026 Endress+Hauser Global Forum in Basel, Switzerland was timely for our ongoing operational and modernization efforts.
Held under the theme “Driving sustainable transformation together” the forum provided practical and useful insights into how AI, data-driven technologies, and modern measurement methods are changing how industries work and keep things running.
One important thing for us is the role of real-time data and smart systems in making our plants more reliable and helping with informed decision-making across our operational units.
It also brought into focus the industry’s move towards predictive maintenance, which uses enhanced measurement and analytics to identify issues with equipment, reduce unplanned downtime and improve overall efficiency.
These insights are relevant to the refinery’s operations and directly related to our goal of optimizing existing assets and improving operational efficiency.
