@Theasianavenger @blackmore17x Ironically, the Video Game is actually MORE MTG-like than the TCG is, with a lot less randomness.
I think Pokemon still has a very simple, youth-oriented appeal, while Magic still comes off as a more mature, complicated hobby.
@Theasianavenger @blackmore17x ...and price point. Even with budget commander decks. Traditionally Pokemon video games were cheaper than even a Commander precon (not factoring console cost, sometimes you get hand downs), and you didn't need to find someone to play with. People just enjoyed Pokemon standalone.
@Theasianavenger @blackmore17x Magic traditionally comes from a place with a lot of pro game coverage and a historical pro circuit. The oldest players in the game grew up knowing it hyper-competitive. I suspect that mindset does pass down in some ways, while pokemon grew the opposite way.
@BudgetCommander@TolarianCollege I have zero doubt the WoTC employees “in charge” will fight tooth and nail for the best of the format.
I have 100% an executive who doesn’t play magic will give themselves the power to overrule those same employees the second they think they can make more money.
Holy fuck seeing TCG nerds talk about cards as if they’re stocks is so stupid.
Buy the card because you want to play with it, be upset that you cannot play with it, but don’t be upset that you “lost your investment”. Don’t gamble on “this card will go up” ffs.
As per usual, any controversial topic in the Magic community immediately dredges up the worst attitudes and behavior, then a wave of people calling out that behavior, then a wave of support for those affected, and then we sorta go back and just rinse and repeat the cycle.
@PleasantKenobi I happen to not own any of those cards that got hit this round. As someone who has been around magic for more than 25 years, I have had random card ups, like KCIs, and plenty of losses (what the heck happened to Tarmogoyf when i was on break?) though, all I really can say is:
Jeweled Lotus being banned is hilarious. This card probably should not exist at all, but it does and everyone unfortunately needs to learn to live with it, except its now banned in the only format it was meant for.
