Can Jannik Sinner Produce the Greatest “Big Title” Season in Tennis History?
https://t.co/jghbeq9Vog
Jannik Sinner is entering the most important stretch of his season with a chance to do something extraordinary.
For this comparison, “big titles” means the sport’s most prestigious trophies: the four Grand Slam tournaments, the ATP Finals and the Masters 1000 events. These are the competitions that usually define a player’s career and separate very good champions from all-time greats.
So far this year, Sinner has already collected six big titles. Those victories have lifted his career total to 17, placing him among some of the most successful players of the modern era.
And his season may be far from finished.
Five opportunities remain
There are five major events left on Sinner’s schedule:
Cincinnati, the US Open, Shanghai, Paris and the ATP Finals.
He has already withdrawn from the Canadian Open, so that opportunity is gone. But five major trophies are still available, meaning Sinner could theoretically finish the season with as many as 11 big titles.
Murray’s position is within reach
Sinner’s 17 career big titles leave him just behind Andy Murray, who has 18.
That means one more victory would bring Sinner level with Murray, while two would move him ahead. Based on Sinner’s current form and the number of opportunities remaining, surpassing Murray appears very likely.
Doing so would lift Sinner to sixth place in the ranking table, behind Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer, Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi.
How does Sinner’s season compare with the Big Three?
The most exciting comparison is about what Sinner could achieve in a single season.
At his peak, Djokovic won 10 big titles in one year. Nadal’s best total was seven, while Federer’s was eight.
Sinner already has six.
One more title would equal Nadal’s best season. Two more would take Sinner past Nadal and level with Federer. Three more would move him beyond Federer. Four would equal Djokovic’s extraordinary total of 10.
That progression makes every remaining tournament significant.
Surpassing Nadal’s seven appears entirely possible. Reaching Federer’s eight would also be realistic if Sinner can maintain his level. Matching Djokovic’s 10 would require an almost flawless finish, but it is now close enough to be discussed seriously.
Could he win every remaining event?
Should Sinner win Cincinnati, the US Open, Shanghai, Paris and the ATP Finals, he would end the year with 11 big titles.
How many can he take home?
That may become one of the biggest stories in tennis this season.
@Zwxsh If saying the GOAT(Messi), it’s Djokovic!
If saying self-discipline(Ronaldo), it’s Djokovic!
If saying total goals or achievements(Ronaldo), it’s Djokovic!
If saying performance at old age(Messi), it’s still Djokovic!!!
So Djokovic is the combination of these two😎
@Zwxsh He holds many Wimbledon records! Which one are you referring to? If just total title number, that’s very possible! If to break all his records, that’s IMPOSSIBLE 😎 because the best time of tennis has passed
Consider the context, Djokovic needs to compete with Nadal, and Nadal is the king of clay. Djokovic was able to beat him several times even in Roland Garros. Who were Borg’s rivals? You could win 100 times against mediocre opponents, but less valuable than just win one time against a super star
