Furious locals slammed the move, exposing it as a calculated attempt by the CCP to use pop culture to force the "automated naturalization" of music fans.

To understand the insult, one must understand what this permit represents. Officially issued by Beijing's Exit and Entry Administration, the Taiwan Compatriot Permit is a biometric card that China forces Taiwanese residents to use because Beijing refuses to recognize the Republic of China (Taiwan) passport. Not a single province in China can pay its own bills. All 28 provinces with available data for Q1 2026 spent more than they collected. And the money they have been using for decades to plug that hole just ran out.

China's Ministry of Finance released Q1 2026 fiscal data showing that local governments collectively collected 36.6 trillion RMB in own revenue while spending 65.6 trillion RMB. They covered 55.9% of their own expenditures. The other 44.1% came from Beijing.

The provincial breakdown makes clear this is not a regional problem. Zhejiang, China's most fiscally efficient province, achieved a 96% self-sufficiency rate. Shanghai hit 90%. Jiangsu 82%. Guangdong 73%. Beijing 66%. Every single one of China's economic powerhouses is spending more than it earns. In western regions like Gansu and Tibet, the numbers fall to 22% and 14% respectively.

For two decades, local governments papered over this gap with land sales. Developers bought land-use rights, local governments spent the proceeds on infrastructure, new cities expanded, and the cycle continued. That cycle is over. State-owned land transfer revenue in Q1 2026 fell 24.4% year-on-year. Through April, the decline widened to 27.2%. Land sales revenue through April totaled 6.8 trillion RMB, down more than a quarter from the same period last year.

Chinese financial scholar Wang Yin put it plainly: "In the past, they could rely on land sales to fill the gap. Now they have nothing to make up for it." Professor Xu from Jiangsu University added: "City expansion, building subways, reckless growth, plus widespread corruption up and down the system, all relied on land transfers. Now developers aren't buying land, houses aren't selling, residents are cutting consumption. Once the economy dies, nothing can solve the fiscal crunch."

Local governments in China are responsible for education, healthcare, pensions, social security, and infrastructure. Those services do not stop when revenues collapse. They get funded through central transfers, special bonds, and debt that accumulates at levels official statistics are not designed to capture. China's broader fiscal deficit, including all budget categories, is estimated by independent analysts to be running at approximately 9% of GDP or higher.

The 1994 tax-sharing reform gave Beijing most of the major revenue sources while leaving local governments to fund most of the actual services. That structural mismatch worked as long as land sales provided a massive unofficial supplement. The property market collapse has removed the supplement. The structural mismatch remains.

Every province that cannot pay its bills depends on Beijing to cover the gap. Beijing is covering the gap with deficits and bonds. The math does not improve with time.

Tsinghua hosts multiple defense laboratories focused on areas such as military AI, guided missiles, and rocket technology, all aligned with China’s military-civil fusion strategy.

Tsinghua University plays a big role in advancing Beijing’s strategic ambitions, including talent cultivation for the CCP elite and technology transfer that bolsters China’s military modernization. Allowing a leader of America’s premier AI and semiconductor company, whose technology is vital to U.S. superiority in computing, autonomous systems, and defense applications, to sit on its board creates an unacceptable channel for CCP influence, sabotage, spying and leakage of sensitive expertise to China.

On their website, Tsinghua Univeristy brags about appeasing Xi JinPing and the CCP.

In one press release on their website titled “Tsinghua Establishes Institute for Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era”, Tsinghua Univeristy said,

“The Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) has approved the establishment of 10 research institutes to study and interpret Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era.
