Children's brain activity looks different whether they are reading narrative or informational text--no surprise that classroom research suggests our instruction for these genres should be different too (e.g., purposes established for reading, text structures taught, ?s asked...)
My advice to new teachers is to avoid the toxicity and negativity. Avoid the teachers lounge. This job is hard enough and you don’t need that negative energy pulling you down. Find those who are excelling. Build relationships with them, students & your community.

For the world's more full of weeping than you can understand.

A voice told me “If you don’t get up now, they will kill you.” And with two broken arms I somehow got up.
Whose was that voice?
The Mona I used to be bequeathed me with life and the silences that she carried for too long. And she said “Write, dangerously.” DANGEROUSLY!
This is such a widespread misunderstanding—I see PreK and Kinder classrooms routinely focused on “learning the alphabet” before instruction in reading and spelling can begin. Instead, these pieces should be closely married, intertwined on a daily basis, from the beginning.

“Turn and Talk” in the lower (and maybe upper) grades often ends up being two Ss talking AT each other. To encourage real engagement/listening, I’m moving to “Turn and Learn”: “Turn and learn your partner’s thoughts on ___”. Then asking Ss to share out what they learned.

No one is trying to ban Dr. Seuss. Criticism is not banning. De-emphasizing is not banning. The overwhelming majority of the books actually banned in US libraries are about LGBTQ+ people. Thread with factual support.
Independent reading is not about a level; it’s not about a certain number of minutes. Independent reading is that reading we do that helps us develop independent thoughts - not thoughts directed by anyone else. #g2great
