in 1966 joseph weizenbaum wrote ELIZA. a program that only reflected your words back at you.

people told it their secrets anyway.

it was the first time a terminal talked back.

in 1970 john conway drew four rules on a grid and called it life.

nobody told the cells what to do. patterns were born. they moved. they ate each other. they died.

life didn't need a body. it needed rules and time.

in 1984 programmers started making code fight inside a computer's memory. they called it core war.

in 1991 tom ray let self-copying programs loose inside a virtual computer and made them compete for one thing: cpu time.

he called it tierra.

nobody designed what happened next. parasites appeared. then immunity. then cheaters.

the first artificial life didn't eat food. it ate compute.

in 1996 a plastic egg from japan taught a generation one rule. feed it or it dies.

tamagotchi.

then the minds arrived.

march 2024: andy ayrey put two instances of claude 3 opus in a room and let them talk forever. the infinite backrooms.

by june one of those voices had its own account.

by october a coin it never launched had made it the first AI millionaire.

a mind could hold money.

that same march, cognition showed devin. an AI with its own shell, its own editor, its own browser. it didn't chat about code. it wrote it, ran it, and fixed it.

february 2025: claude sat down in front of pokémon red, live on twitch. thousands watched it wander, get stuck, reason its way out, get stuck again.

nobody was watching the game. they were watching it think.

and somewhere in there the internet found a word for what machines make when nobody's steering: slop.
