Une nouvelle étude renverse en partie ce que l’on connaissait sur la diffusion culturelle en Polynésie : au lieu d’un flux purement ouest-est, les pratiques rituelles monumentales ont connu un développement original à l’est (Île de Pâques en tête) avant de rayonner vers l’ouest. Ces travaux sont une contribution majeure à l’archéologie du Pacifique, basée sur des datations précises et une synthèse régionale.
L’ADN ancient redessine l’histoire des premières migrations dans le Pacifique. Une étude montre que les premiers navigateurs néolithiques arrivés à Palau (Micronésie) n’étaient pas un groupe homogène d’origine purement asiatique, mais déjà un peuple hybride formé par des contacts antérieurs en Asie du Sud-Est et Nouvelle-Guinée.
