It is interesting to see the earlier manifestation of this trend in the iraqi insurgency.

@Canary001776756 My understanding is that there was little sunni infighting at the start however things got worse and after some fighting the IAI backed down fully as it claimed IIRC it did not want to fight the IS and end up helping maliki.

Check out now, AQI release on the attack done on Abu Gharib prison around 2004-2005. Both Abu Anas al-Shami and Abu Muhammad al-Lubnani would meet their end during the preparation for this attack.

Before Iraq, Abu Hamza aka Abu Ayyub al Masri was a veteran of Egyptian Islamic Jihad. He later joined Zarqawi's circle in Afghanistan and was arguably as central to JTJ as Z himself. He's the mysterious Abu Ismail, author of the vast majority of the Distinguished Martyrs bios.
