The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA) of 1996 is a landmark U.S. law that strengthened immigration controls, increased penalties for immigration violations, and expanded the grounds for deportation. Key provisions include creating expedited removal procedures, which allows for deportation without a hearing in certain cases, and establishing penalties for crimes committed by immigrants. The act also included measures to limit access to benefits and created new enforcement programs, such as delegating immigration enforcement authority to state and local law enforcement.
Key provisions of the act
Expedited removal: This allows immigration officials to deport individuals who are deemed inadmissible without a hearing before an immigration judge.
Increased penalties: The law imposed criminal penalties for offenses such as alien smuggling and the use of fraudulent documents. It also expanded the types of crimes that could lead to deportation for immigrants.
Limited access to benefits: IIRIRA restricted eligibility for certain public benefits for immigrants.
Enforcement and cooperation: The act created new enforcement programs like the Secure Communities program, which allows federal immigration checks on individuals booked into local jails. It also authorized the 287(g) program, which allows the delegation of specified immigration officer duties to state and local law enforcement under federal direction.
Restrictions on judicial review: The law limited federal court jurisdiction over certain immigration decisions, making it more difficult to challenge removal orders.
Bars from re-entry: It established bars from re-entry for individuals who have been unlawfully present in the U.S. for certain periods of time. For example, unlawful presence for 180 days but less than one year can result in a three-year ban from re-entry.
Impact and controversy
Proponents argue the act was necessary to close loopholes, deter illegal immigration, and protect legal immigrants.
Critics contend the act has contributed to an inefficient immigration system, leading to large backlogs in immigration courts, and that it has undermined due process and refugee protections for asylum seekers.
@ChrisMurphyCT
Why don't you and your clique of poleznyye duraki surrender the donkey to its rightful owners, true Democrats and adopt the hammer and sickle since you do nothing but spew Marx and Engels' pablum!
You're a fucking traitor and I can't wait until all of this catches up with you and your ilk!
I gleefully await. KARMA IS A BITCH!
It is and it isn't.
If you are a foreign national or a naturalized citizen you are on a slippery slope.
The State Department can yank your resident alien status and have you expelled, Persona non Grata. And the Boasbergs will turn activist but that's an Article II Executive Action and a Boasberg would be way out of his lane legally impotent!
A naturalized citizen could be denatualized and expelled but that takes a little more doing but certainly not impossible!
A citizen would need incite violence for a short stay at club fed. but violent rhetoric and actually inciting violence are two completely different animals.
One is protected the other isn't.
@vileTexan@SenFettermanPA THESE ARE NOT DEMOCRATS!!!
They are a group of Socialist Radicals that have Co-opted the Democrat Party!
And DINO's are a few whole levels above insane than RINO's!!!
Fetterman is an ACTUAL Democrat. The people that have usurped the Democrat party aren't even Radical Democrats they are Socialist/Communist Radicals to the Nth degree!
Real Democrats like Real Republicans still have common sense. These Radicals on the left that are calling themselves Democrats have NO SENSE!
That is not protected under 1A!
I got suspended for a harmless quip about a true fucking asshole for "inciting violence" when there was nothing about committing, praising, or hoping for violence in my post but 𝕏 will post this Anti-American hate speech!
𝕏, either have one set of rules for EVERYONE or don't have any at all!
Actually he posted a video that said he wasn't afraid to take a life TO PROTECT HIS FAMILY!
I know I wouldn't hesitate but I also wouldn't post a video saying so.
At one time it was taken for granted in the US. Today if you killed an intruder assaulting your family the left would make YOU the villain and the intruder a martyr!
I'm a Trump supporter but people who work public service government jobs are usually given a uniform or a dress code that prevents them from wearing anything that espouses a political, commercial, religious, etc. message while on the job.
If he can't figure that out maybe he shouldn't be working a public job.
2 years ago when I told my cardiologist I got my Flu & Pneumonia vaccines he asked if I've had any COVID vaccines. I just told him I had the initial 2 shots. He forbade me from getting anymore COVID jabs!
He said in the 20 odd years that he's been a cardiologist he has never had as many patience with myocarditis and pericarditis and that was just because of the covid vaccine!
@MagLach7852@us_connie No it's a Delray.
In '58 top of the line to economy package was:
Impala, Bel Air, Biscayne, then Del Ray.
In '59 the Del Ray was dropped from the lineup and the Biscayne became the economy version.
But you could still order all the amenities of the Impala on the sub-versions.
@us_connie That's a '58 Chevy Delray, the last year it was produced.
Chevy introduced the Biscayne in '58.
The Delray was the economy version of the Impala all 5 years it was in production.
