Like the approach of Brereton when questioned in Senate Estimates about the NACC, so often the attitude of those being questioned on our behalf, officials paid by the Australian public and supposed to serve our interests, is arrogant, evasive, deflective, resentful of accountability, and dismissive of their responsibilities.

Obfuscation, denial, delay and even, at times, outright contempt for the Australian public are too common.

The constant ‘taking on notice’ to avoid answering questions.. One recent interviewee took on notice, that they’d taken on notice, in order to take on notice. It’s disgraceful.

The whole approach needs to change. And heads of departments need to lead and set acceptable standards.

Trust in government and public service is based on respect for, and accountability to those they are supposed to serve.

The Australian public is the ultimate owner, not a nuisance to be avoided, excluded, or in any way denied information.
