I would start with how much you want to describe when you write it, but here are the few questions I ask myself when it comes to magic and how it affects the characters and the world around them:

-Are there circles that you want to describe? The lines forming, they appear out of nowhere, they have to draw them? Maybe there aren't circles and it just pops from the user.
-What do they do to cast it? Do they need incantations, or does the magic just manifest with thought?
-Does it need fuel? Mana? Some cool crystals? A literal arm and a leg?
-Is it tied to something around the world? "These are the big boy crystals that allow us to cast!" or "The gods have bestowed upon us the ability to cast!"
-How fantasy vs sciency do you want it? It's the difference between "Things just happen! Cool!" and "To cast this spell I need to know how water works first." On each side of the spectrum.

There are a few videos on Soft Magic Systems vs Hard Magic Systems. A hard magic system would be something like you have to give up something in order to cast, while a soft system would be something like... Avatar the last airbender. You don't have to do much research on it, but it helps flesh out how you want things to work. Especially if magic is a big thing in your world.

-How long specific things take to heal.
-The temperature of the earth the further into it you go.
-How an economy starts using currencies.
-How much light does a cat need before it can't see in the dark.

Amongst other more normal things haha.

I have a question #writingcommunity #fantasyfiction . Am I bad at planning if my story keeps becoming longer? How much is too much? Like I have say... three/four villains I'd like to introduce but they are each related to a different main character.

I am ultra new to the writing scene, so hopefully someone experienced sees this.
More detailed context below.

A long time ago I started writing my story, and originally I thought one book would be enough. But as I kept writing I realized that it'd be too much for one, so I opted for a trilogy (It also kinda changed because I couldn't kill a character haha).

Now as I write the second book, I feel like there is an insane amount of things to go over. I have... the main characters, but I also have to introduce and develop a third "mainish" character. Then I also have various "villains" but I feel like that's way too much to introduce in the second and third book.

I also have the world-wide stakes villain. So as I'm writing my second book, I got some feedback... and I feel like I am cramming way too much into one single book. At first I thought I'd setup for the final third book, but now I feel like it's way too much.

My first book is about 100k words at about 350 pages and that's kind of what I'm aiming for the second book as well.

I have the firm belief that AI is to be used as a tool rather than a replacement. Use it responsibly if you are going to use it.
I use it to create references so I have something more concise for the artists I hire.
If you are scared about them using your book, read the terms. Most AI subscriptions will opt you out of training if you use their paid versions.

@zu_4761 SAED is so freaking cool, landing those head shots and seeing all the numbers pop from the perfect alignment feels so good. I wish it'd be more worth while, now it feels like pizza cutter can deal more damage.
