A key highlight is the origin of ornamental medaka. Integrating wild medaka data (Katsumura et al. 2019) shows ornamental strains are likely monophyletic and closely related to Kansai–Setouchi wild populations, suggesting domestication there in the Edo period (1603-1867).

Our population genomics paper on ornamental medaka is out! We analyzed 86 strains, suggesting a single origin from wild populations in the Kansai–Setouchi region. GWAS identified genes for body color, shape, eyes, and fins. https://t.co/OXSoU8Ag24

Population genomics allowed us to identify genomic regions underlying multiple phenotypes, identify several strong candidate genes, and discover adcy5 as the causal gene for the black Orochi phenotype, bringing us closer to the genomic basis of the phenotypic diversity.
