James McDaniel joined the Navy at 18 and served in Vietnam. He stayed on in the Reserve, then carried the mail for 23 years. His son called him "a fun, loving guy." He and his wife Gloria were coming up on 60 years together, with four kids, 10 grandkids, and four great-grandkids.

Last Wednesday, at 81, he was riding his scooter out of a Georgia Walmart when a parking lot fight turned into gunfire. He wasn't part of it. He just wanted to get home.

Gloria said they did something very, very wrong and need to be punished. She's right.

Somewhere over America tonight, planeloads of old soldiers are heading home from Washington.

Three Honor Flights took off this morning. Sarasota, Florida sent 85 veterans, including a World War II vet, seven Korean War vets, and 12 women who served. St. Pete, Florida sent 76 on its last flight of the year. Peoria, Illinois flew its 41st mission.

They spent the day at the WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam memorials, Arlington National Cemetery, and Iwo Jima. The women got special recognition at the Military Women's Memorial. Every trip is free to the veterans and paid for by donations.

A lot of them are Vietnam vets who came home decades ago to nothing, no parade and no thank you.

Tonight they land to crowds waving flags. St. Pete's flight comes in around 7:15 PM ET, Sarasota's around 8:50 PM ET, and Peoria's around 9:30 PM CT. Get out there and welcome them home.

It took a while, but they're finally getting the welcome home they earned.
