The Crested Caracara, which is seen throughout South Texas and West Texas, is one of 10 varieties of caracaras. One of my ornithologist friends said they "are a falcon that looks like an eagle and acts like a vulture." They are omnivorous and eat both live prey and carrion.
Laura Marble sent in this 1957 photo of herself, her mom and her siblings at one of my favorite Texas places, Monahans Sandhills State Park. Laura is in the dress and cowboy boots and says that such attire was pretty much mandatory for girls back then, even in the sandy hills.
