In 2014, when India reached Mars on its very first attempt, a feat the Americans and the Soviets never managed, the @nytimes drew a cartoon. An Indian farmer with a cow, knocking at the door of an "Elite Space Club," while two Westerners in suits read the news inside.

They ignored us. Then they laughed.

Today, India answered from a launch pad in Sriharikota.

This morning, Vikram-1, India's first privately developed orbital rocket, roared into space and reached orbit. It was dreamed and built by @SkyrootA, a company born in Hyderabad, founded by two young engineers who walked out of @isro and refused to accept that Indians could not build this themselves. With this flight, India stands with only the United States and China as nations whose private industry can carry a rocket to orbit.

So here is our reply to that cartoon.

We were never knocking at the door of the Elite Space Club. We were building our own. And its address is Hyderabad.

This is the Hyderabad that Chief Minister Sri @revanth_anumula has always spoken of. A city that does not measure itself against others in India, but takes its place among the great cities of the world and competes with them on merit. A city where the future is not imported. It is engineered here, by our own sons and daughters.

To @PawanKChandana, to @bharathdaka, and to every engineer and technician at @SkyrootA: you turned the dream of a billion Indians into fire and flight. You did not just reach orbit. You carried a nation with you!

And to every young founder in spacetech and deeptech, watching this and wondering if it can be done: come what may, you carry India's pride on your shoulders, and Hyderabad will always be the ground beneath your ambition.
