African endemic viruses are under studied, during my degree time I came to notice that Diseases such as lassa fever, ebola virus disease, marburg virus disease, rift Valley fever are often classified globally as “neglected tropical diseases” or region specific threats.
The core reasons are :
Africa rely on external grants Research agendas are often set outside the continent.
Thousands of African virologists work abroad.
So how do we solve this?
Magic can't fix this Africa need to :
Build Independent African Research Power institutions like:
Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention
West African Health Organization
must be:
Fully funded by African governments
Given research autonomy
Equipped with high-containment labs (BSL-3/4)
Africa must move from being a sample supplier to being a data owner and vaccine developer.
Despite all that may go wrong, it's always just better to be an optimist
It may take time, mental decay, but we are in the right spot and destined for absolute greatness
Life is far too short to not have grand perspective
Optimist
