Too many tourists who watch anime have gotten a distorted reality of what "girl failures" are really like, and most of them are just stylized fiction, where Yani Neko breaks that trope.

Most anime and the aesthetic of it portray them with appealing overtones. The game and anime for needy girl overdose show mental illness, self-harm, addiction, etc in a visually pleasing manner that sanitizes the horror of it.

Yandare tropes like Yuno from Mirai Nikki also show a cute aesthetic with a crazy only for you fantasy that's dramatic and exciting instead of sad and pathetic. It also triggers a savior complex because of her tragic past, where you can fantasize about "fixing her".

Or Aqua... whiny, incompetent, alcoholic, a definition of a failure... but she is one of the most popular characters in Konosuba because of that unrealistic cute bratty vibe.

Or every character in DDLC... All cute, all stylized, and the psychological horror element made it fun.

And there are so many others like Tomoko Kuroki, Bocchi, etc that land in the unrealistic, cute, funny, stylized, or exaggerated.

It is also fuel for a subset of the anime fans who are lonely men who see girl failures as easy targets for dating and relationships... with that"I can fix her" mentality. The mainstream girl failure media shows that flaws are fun, mental illness is charming, addictions are cute, incompetence is adorable. The idea of saving someone gives men a sense of purpose, especially if they are unsuccessful in real life.

Some men then relate their own failure traits like depression, aimlessness, addiction, self-harm, and develop a parasocial mutual relationship with the fictional characters and then "grow" together.

Men are also more likely than women to date down, where they will date women who are of lower status, money, intelligence, and competence, etc. The reverse of hypergamy, and girl failures feel safer to date for some, despite real world statistics showing otherwise.

Chainsmoker cat is the complete opposite of that trope, and most of these "I can fix her" people just nope out from that. No cute stylization of the gross outs, no elements of "fix it with love"... it's just a raw, realistic look at the slow, gross, and eroding reality of addiction and neglect... packaged in a wrap of dark humor.

If there is some equivalent to Western media... Chainsmoker Cat has the vibe of the black comedy movie Trainspotting with a little bit of grinding erosion, like Requiem for a Dream.

Also, if you are a fan of dark humor, and if you havn't watched Trainspotting, I highly recommend it!
