Somebody asked me why I drink whiskey and smoke cigars.
I was between the second pour and the third so the answer came easy.
The whiskey loosens the grip on whatever you've been carrying since Tuesday. The people you've lost pull up a chair. You let them sit.
The cigar keeps you company while that happens.
Nothing asks less of you than a good cigar. No agenda. No opinion. Just smoke and time moving at the right speed for once.
The ember fades. Glass empties. You're back.
But something shifted. You didn't catch whatever you were after. You never do.
Just close enough to remember it's out there.
Close enough to keep looking.
That's why. 🥃🚬
The Nighthawk went on to be remembered. AMA Hall of Fame. Art of the Motorcycle exhibition. National Motor Museum. Discovery Channel's Greatest Motorbikes Ever.
None of that surprised me.
There was something complete about that machine.
I solved a different problem by selling it. Kept the peace. Kept the marriage for a while longer anyway.
The most painful part was the sentence delivered in variations over months.
You have kids. Responsibilities. You're going to die on that thing.
She wasn't wrong. I ran out of arguments.
So I sold it.
The crash came later.
Took a corner too aggressive. Hit an oil spot I never saw. Ended up under the gas tank of a diesel truck at a four-way stop.
Driver looking down at me asking if I was okay.
Worst road rash I'd ever had.
But that wasn't the most painful part.
Took her around the block to show her what the fuss was about.
The throttle did what throttles do when you're showing off just a little more than you intended.
Front wheel came up. She grabbed on the way people grab when they're certain they're about to die.
I felt that for a week.
She was never a fan of riding with me after that.
Honda built it to be everything — 749cc four-cylinder, 70hp, 42 lb-ft of torque, hydraulic clutch, four Keihin carbs.
On paper it read like a sensible machine.
What the spec sheet didn't tell you was what that torque felt like when you weren't ready for it.
I found out the hard way. So did my mother-in-law.
President Trump said in his speech tonight that previous leaders should’ve dealt with this Islamic republic.
He’s right the policy of appeasement does not work with a theocracy.
For those who are lacking context, this 12 minute documentary will help establish that.
I've been doing this a long time. Owned a cigar bar. A custom motorcycle shop. Logged more miles on two wheels than I can account for. Somewhere in all of that, Ash & Asphalt started taking shape — not as a brand, but as a way of making sense of the things I keep coming back to.
Cigars. Whiskey. The Road. The People.
I'm expanding this now. The mounts may change — two wheels, four hooves, whatever the road requires. The cigars will be different. The whiskey, the locations, the conversations. All of it moving. What won't change is how I look at it.
No scores. No fluff. Just what it actually feels like to be in it. If that's your kind of thing, stick around.

We talk about being present like it's something you achieve once and keep. It isn't.
There are families who would give everything to stand in a river like this again with someone they lost. That's not a small thing to sit with.
Waist deep in a cold western river. Gold Star burning down slow. Line riding the air above me.
Not working on anything. Just in it. Grateful for it.
That's the whole thing. That's all it ever was.

Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. Aged a full year. Cedar, cream, cocoa, a little honey that finds you in the middle and stays.
There's a thing that happens when a cast goes right. The line unrolls like it has all the time in the world. The fly settles. Everything waits.
That second is the whole reason for being out there. Not the fish. That second.
The Gold Star burned the same way. Unhurried. Even. The cigar agreed.
United Cigars brought the Gold Star back in 2024. Named it for Gold Star families. The ones who lost someone who didn't come home.
Part of every purchase goes to the Navy SEAL Gold Star Program. Over $30,000 raised from the first run alone.
That band — stars and stripes pressed in brass — isn't decoration. It means something specific to people who've earned the right to wear it.
I thought about that standing in the river.
There's a quiet that only exists when you're standing in moving water.
Not silence. The river has plenty to say.
But it clears everything else out.
Had a cigar in my shirt pocket when I waded in. Gold Star. Didn't know the full story behind the name yet.
I do now. 🧵
Member of the House of Representatives of the Netherlands, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, warns America of the planned Islamic takeover
She says there are actual manuals that were created by Muslim leaders to take over the United States, and they’re being followed
“The establishment of mosques of Islamic centers that are paid for by governments like Saudi Arabia and Qatar to promote, assist a belief system that is hostile and that is designed to replace the existing our American system. — It is gradual. It is a match through the systems, through government, through the media, through education, through the family. And I'm not making these things up.
— You can access all this information. You can get these Dawah manuals and just read for yourself how they set out their strategies, get into campuses, establish Muslim student associations. The Muslim student associations, they're given tools and tactics and to islamize that particular institution. And it's the same for government, the same for media. And it's working.
It's working because right now you cannot discuss political Islam. It's been made a taboo, a time Islamophobia has been invented. That makes you, especially — a white man, it, it uses your own vulnerabilities against you because the minute you start to question their goals, their objectives, you're not having a conversation about those particular facts. We are going to have a conversation about you are bigotry”
