@CraigVecellio AVERAGE life expectancy. More people died in infancy and of childhood disease back then which skewed the average way down. Those who survived to adulthood could expect to live into their 70s and even 80s.
The first generation to receive it paid fuck all into the sytem.

People who survived to adulthood had life spans fairly equivalent to modern ones, and possibly even better quality of life, overall. Drop dead at 70 or live to 85, but the last 10 years are spent in assisted living, taking 34 pills a day and shitting in a diaper.

AVERAGE life expectancy was low because infant and child mortality was high, skewing the average down. A lot.
