WhatsApp is exploring new navigation updates for the Android interface that affect how users interact with the bottom navigation bar.
First, WhatsApp is testing a contacts section where users can see who is currently online. The section will also let users see who was recently active, so they can identify who may still be reachable even if they are not online at the moment. People who don't share their last seen and online activity won't be displayed in this section.
To make this feature more accessible, WhatsApp is planning to turn it into a dedicated tab in the bottom navigation bar. This would give users a direct way to check contact availability without opening the app settings. However, the final placement still depends on how WhatsApp decides to reorganize its navigation structure.
WhatsApp could remove the Meta AI tab and replace it with the Contacts tab. In that case, WhatsApp would restore the floating action button in the Chats tab.
WhatsApp may also replace the Updates tab, which follows recent experiments with the Chats tab. These tests include moving status updates into the Chats tab. Since WhatsApp also plans to introduce a channel filter directly in the chat list, these two features reduce the need for a separate Updates tab. If these changes move forward, the Updates tab may no longer be necessary as a separate section.
At this stage, it is still unclear which direction WhatsApp will choose. The most likely scenario appears to involve removing the Meta AI tab, as this would minimize changes to the navigation structure. However, WhatsApp continues to test different options, so the final decision has not been confirmed yet.
