This day 64 years ago: The Little Rock Nine began their first full day of classes at Little Rock Central High School. They were the first black students to integrate in the state of Arkansas.
On this day in 1862: Abraham Lincoln issued the preliminary Emancipation Proclamation, stating that all enslaved people in the states in rebellion would be freed on January 1, 1863.
