The strategic implications could be considerable. Once fully operational, these systems would substantially enhance Ethiopia's aerial capabilities and could shift the regional balance of air power in Addis Ababa's favour.

Brigadier General Abreha Tesfay, widely known as Dinkul, has been surrounded by the Ethiopian National Defence Force (ENDF) and its Tigray Peace Force (TPF) allies.

Dinkul, one of the TPLF's most experienced commanders, was credited with reorganising Tigrayan forces into an insurgency during the 2020–2022 war.

Following the collapse of its Southern Front offensive, the TPLF had reportedly pinned its hopes on Dinkul repeating those successes as its retreating forces abandoned conventional warfare.

Dinkul had reportedly vowed to fight to the death. Yet instead of the heroic last stand he promised, he now finds himself surrounded by the very forces he swore to resist.

Coming just a day after the reported capture of General John Medid, Dinkul's capture would deliver another devastating blow to the TPLF's efforts to regroup.

Bold declarations are one thing. The realities of the battlefield are quite another.
