Possibly the greatest debate ever put on screen. Some of our modern-day news-channel debaters could genuinely learn a thing or two from this one.

This legendary sequence from the 1977 Kannada film Babruvahana is a verbal war between Arjuna and his son Babruvahana, with Dr. Rajkumar brilliantly playing both characters. Babruvahana is furious after Arjuna insults his mother Chitrangada. He challenges Arjuna’s pride and questions whether his legendary reputation is enough to justify the way he speaks and behaves.

Arjuna responds with the confidence of a warrior who knows his place in history. He reminds Babruvahana of his achievements, his victories, his Gandiva and the battles that made his name legendary. But Babruvahana refuses to be intimidated. Instead, he counters Arjuna point by point and questions how much of that greatness came from Arjuna alone, repeatedly bringing Krishna’s role into the argument.

The debate then becomes even sharper. When Arjuna speaks about his bravery and accomplishments, Babruvahana brings up uncomfortable moments from his past. He questions where that bravery was when Draupadi was humiliated. He mocks the period when Arjuna lived as Brihannala. He even invokes Abhimanyu, turning Arjuna’s own history against him.

Arjuna does not back down either. He speaks of the power of his Gandiva and the countless warriors he has defeated. Babruvahana’s answer is simple and fearless. Whether Arjuna is truly as great as he claims will not be decided by reputation or words, but on the battlefield.

That is what makes this entire sequence so special. It is not just a song and it is not just an argument. It is dialogue, poetry, sarcasm, pride, history and emotion woven together like a proper debate. Every claim gets a counter. Every boast gets questioned. Neither side is allowed an easy victory.

And the best part? Both sides are Dr. Rajkumar.

Arjuna carries the pride and authority of a legendary warrior. Babruvahana carries the anger and conviction of a son defending his mother’s dignity. Same actor. Two completely different energies. One unforgettable face-off.

Almost fifty years later, this still feels more disciplined, intelligent and entertaining than half the shouting matches we call debates today.
