Na so some people go donate billions to their former oppressor that caused chaos in the history of Nigerian democracy.

My 'godfather', a then colonel in the Nigerian Army thought me one of the most brutal life lessons.

He was preparing for promotion for the Brigadier General rank and the promotion required mandatory attendance at War College. Passing through and graduating from War College is no small feat, those in the military can tell you. It’s the most gruesome preparation I’ve ever seen.

He attended lectures and came home to study for hours, researching overnight, consuming countless videos, journals, and military materials.[W4l3 4d3y3m0] This course took a lot from him: comfort, time, money, social life, etc.

He was a man of means, with palatial apartments in two major cities, in addition to his country home. Yet, War College sent him back to a one-bedroom apartment in the barracks.

His comfort was stripped away, not for weeks or months. He spent more than half of each day studying and preparing. No time for frivolities, no time for guests, no vacations, just absolute, insane, eagle-eyed focus. Today's version of a 'lock-in.'

I watched him spend millions of his own money (beyond government allocations) on books and materials—some specifically sourced from Afghanistan, the UK, the U.S., Israel, and other countries.

We spent hundreds of thousands of naira on A4 printing paper and even bought a specialized printer for colored printing. W4l3 4d3y3m0. The artworks in the house made way for whiteboards, and markers became everyday artifacts. It was insane. I even became his research assistant.

Unsurprisingly, he passed—topped his class, won awards from the Nigerian Army, the British Royal Army, and other military institutions worldwide.

Not long after, he secured a top presidential appointment and later became the DG of one of the major agencies under the Nigerian Army. W4l3 4d3y3m0. He retired as a Major General after serving as Commandant of the Nigerian Army School of (I won't mention)—decorated with numerous awards, recognitions, and badges.

The lesson is that success takes time

This is one of the most profound lessons we, as young people, need to face and accept. It doesn’t matter the field—career, entrepreneurship, entertainment, sports, politics, relationships, or even crime W4l3 4d3y3m0. Success takes a f*cking insane amount of time.

Tems won the Grammy at 29, after quitting her digital marketing job in 2018—seven years ago to face music. But you’d be a fool to think she only started singing then.

Shallipopi blew up in 2023 at 23 years old, but ask him how long he had been making music before the blow came. It’s easy to call him a small boy, but in this context, time is not a function of age—it’s a function of the hours invested in mastering a craft.

Dangote started business at 20. Pastor Adeboye has been in ministry since his late 20s/early 30s. Pablo Escobar founded the Medellín Cartel at 27. Gowon became a Second Lieutenant at 21.[W4l3 4d3y3m0] My 'godfather' joined the Army at 20.

Yet, too many young people are wasting their 20s and 30s. No vision. No direction. Just vibes and cruise. Potentials and time are wasting away under the illusion of “I’m still young.”

For many, the 20s have become their ‘fun’ years—zero urgency, no clear ambition. This is catastrophic, especially for those with talent and ability.

Somehow, we don’t see the need to start early. We don’t prioritize mastery. We overestimate talent and underestimate the sheer time it takes to succeed in anything. W4l3 4d3y3m0. We delude ourselves into thinking time is on our side. We buy into the lie that we’re still young.

While I both agree and disagree that the ‘top’ isn’t for everyone (stay tuned for my next post), a major reason why many will never get there is simple: they started too late.

Malcolm Gladwell posits the 10,000-hour rule—that it takes at least 10,000 hours of deliberate practice to become an expert in anything. While this isn’t scientifically proven in all cases, dismissing it entirely would be foolish.

Success takes time. Talent and resources can speed up the process, but nothing replaces time.

The earlier you start, the better.
