DoorDash is getting into the merchant cash advance business - the equivalent of payday lending.

It's so usurious that they legally cannot write the word "loan" anywhere in the documentation or marketing materials.

But they lend restaurants short-term money based on the establishment's DoorDash transactional history, and then pay themselves back directly by taking a % of all future DoorDash orders until the loan is repaid.

This structure is historically a downward spiral for merchants. But DoorDash doesn't care.

Because of how the note is structured, they effectively become creditor number one; they control the repayment % and the duration of the loan, and they always get paid back first. And if the repayments track below the predictive model, DoorDash simply requires a remedy payment to mitigate their exposure.

This structure appeals particularly to merchants with zero or lousy credit, and can be done without the knowledge of any bank or other creditor... until it's too late.
