About the Jazz Sessions…
Earlier this year, I began embracing a new brand that encompassed and built upon things I had been doing and discussing in the writing community… Story Jazz: Create in the Moment. It’s about the freedom to create spontaneously and discover hidden gems, in the vein of Ray Bradbury, James Artimus Owen, Dean Wesley Smith, and others of my mentors. The metaphor is clear, I hope: There is beauty and art in a symphony, and there is beauty and art in improvisational jazz. Neither is “better,” they’re just different styles with different energy. And improvisational storytelling has the same sort of spontaneous energy as jazz. So with the help of an amazing logo from Cherrie Lynn Fors, I started using the Story Jazz brand.
At about the same time, I was wishing I could teach more. I teach at Fyrecon, but that’s only once a year. I sometimes teach at Apex Writers Group, but again maybe once a year. And I sometimes teach at Grand Rapids Region Writers Group (GRRWG), but we only have 10 classes per year; and now that I’m the program chair, it would be a conflict of interest to schedule myself as 1 of the 10.
But I have an alternative: a professional Zoom account, which I have used for teaching in the past. I can teach anytime I want. I just have to let people know.
So in consultation with my editor Annmarie SanSevero, I decided to tie the classes into my Story Jazz brand. The whole thing was very impromptu, after all, from concept to first class in under a week. I’ve taught 11 classes so far, with another 11 scheduled. After that? Who knows? What I like about the Jazz Sessions is I get to decide what to teach and when to teach it. I can teach whatever I want.
Maybe even a class on Story Jazz…
"How do I know if my manuscript is ready for editing?"
It's a good idea to finish multiple revisions and seek feedback from critique partners before investing in professional editing services.
