Since there’ll probably be a lot said about Stephen Foster in coming weeks and months due to his name and likeness at the top of the page, I just want to remind you that Foster was indeed an Independence baby, born on the Fourth of July, 1826—on the very day those two Founders and Presidents, Adams and Jefferson, passed on—the irony and profundity of which led to his life, times, and cultural world becoming the central focus of this entire endeavor.
