Negotiations concluded with a #HighSeasTreaty! This agreement will provide the legal structure for the establishment of fully & highly protected areas in the high seas.
Thank you to the many #BlueLeaders & ocean champions who persisted for so long to achieve this historic win๐ช
At #COP15, the Parties adopted a Global Biodiversity Framework that includes 30x30. #theBlueLeaders wouldโve liked to see more ambition for the ocean but we will continue working with fellow Heads of State and Ministers until we reach at least 30% fully & highly protected ocean.
As #COP15 enters the home stretch, the Blue Leaders are working hard to secure an ambitious global ocean protection target: at least 30% of the ocean is fully & highly protected, free from environmentally damaging activities, by 2030. This is how we solve the biodiversity crisis.
โHigh ambition is necessary for nature to heal and for humans to survive. Fully protecting 30% of our ocean [by 2030] is critical to ensure that we maintain marine ecosystems vital to human life.โ - ๐ต๐ผ Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment, Steven Victor.
โWe want to leave #COP15 as Blue Leaders. The ocean gives color & name to our planet and enables our climate system to function. We must achieve 30x30; we must feel proud of our blue planet. Letโs be Blue Leaders.โ -๐ช๐ธ Deputy PM, Minister of Ecological Transition, Teresa Ribera.
โAs Blue Leaders, weโre working hard to achieve 30% ambitious & high quality protection. The ocean is the largest carbon sink to help us address climate change; we must protect it, protect marine ecosystems, our resources, and biodiversity.โ - ๐ต๐ฆ VM of Environment, Diana Laguna.
As the #COP15 clock ticks, the Blue Leaders continue to push for an ambitious agreement, making it clear that the best way to set marine biodiversity on a path to recovery and resilience is to fully and highly protect at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030.
With Ministers now present at #COP15, the Blue Leaders are hard at work advancing and reinforcing the need to fully and highly protect 30% of the global ocean by 2030 to address the twin crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. ๐
