A great deal has been said about the birthright citizenship decision, but the central point is that Justice Thomas completely exposed the logical incoherence at the heart of Chief Justice Roberts’ “reasoning.”

You cannot reconcile a constitutional framework that denies automatic citizenship to members of Indian tribes, even when born on U.S. soil, with a doctrine that automatically hands out citizenship to Chinese and other birth tourists as if it were candy.

There is no logical, coherent, or even barely comprehensible way to square those positions. It is simply not possible. If Native Americans are not entitled to Fourteenth Amendment citizenship, then neither are birth tourists.

It’s incredible watching conservatives repeatedly make this argument without realizing that it completely dismantles their pursuit of metaphysical neutrality.

Nothing is ever neutral.

Christians have no obligation to treat Christianity and Islam as equally legitimate belief systems to organize society around any more than ancient Athens had an obligation to treat Hellenism and the Persian imperial cult as interchangeable belief systems.

So if we’re going to concede the obvious here that state institutions shape public opinion, why on earth would we not want to control them and shape public opinion in accordance with our worldview instead of the worldview of someone like Mamdani?

Most modern Christians believe the latter despite the Bible via example and explicitly saying it is the former.
