Simulation Theory: The Misconception That Everyone Keeps Repeating

Simulation Theory has become one of the most discussed ideas in modern philosophy, science fiction, and technology. Yet despite countless debates, podcasts, and documentaries, there is a fundamental problem: people often use the term simulation to describe completely different concepts.

As a result, discussions about simulation theory frequently become confused because participants are arguing against interpretations that were never intended in the first place.

To understand the idea properly, it helps to separate two distinct meanings of the word simulation.

The Video Game Simulation

The most common interpretation imagines reality as a giant computer game.

In this version of Simulation Theory, our universe was created by some external intelligence—a programmer, advanced civilization, artificial superintelligence, or perhaps even something resembling a deity. Human beings are comparable to characters inside a video game. The stars, planets, and laws of physics are simply code running on hardware that exists somewhere outside our universe.

This perspective gained popularity through philosopher Nick Bostrom and became part of mainstream culture through films such as The Matrix.

The logic is straightforward:

Humanity is getting closer to creating immersive virtual worlds.
Artificial intelligence continues to advance.
Computing power grows exponentially.
Future civilizations may be capable of creating conscious simulated beings.

If future civilizations can create billions of realistic virtual worlds, then statistically there may be more simulated observers than biological ones. Under this reasoning, we could simply be one of those simulated populations.

This interpretation often leads to familiar questions:

Who is the programmer?
Why was the simulation created?
Can the simulation be hacked?
Are we merely NPCs?
Is there an "outside" world?

These are fascinating questions, but they are only one interpretation of simulation theory.

The Rendering Interpretation

A far more subtle interpretation suggests something very different.

What if reality is not a simulation inside a computer?

What if spacetime itself is the simulation?

In this view, the universe we experience is not fundamental reality. Instead, it is a rendered representation of something far deeper and more complex.

Consider how autonomous vehicles perceive the world.

Systems used in self-driving cars do not experience reality directly. Sensors collect enormous quantities of information. That information is processed, compressed, abstracted, and transformed into a simplified operational model that allows decisions to be made.

The "world" perceived by the vehicle is not reality itself—it is a rendered representation optimized for navigation.

Likewise, the reality experienced by human observers may be a rendered interface rather than the underlying system.

Space, time, matter, energy, and even causality could be emergent features of a deeper computational or informational substrate.

In this interpretation, simulation does not necessarily imply a programmer sitting outside the universe.

Instead, reality behaves like a dynamic rendering engine that continuously generates the world we experience.

Why These Ideas Are Often Confused

The confusion occurs because both interpretations use similar language:

Information
Computation
Observers
Processing
Rendering
Emergence

Yet they make very different claims.

The Video Game Model asks:

Who created the simulation?

The Rendering Model asks:

Why does reality appear as a rendered experience at all?

The first focuses on external creators.

The second focuses on the architecture of reality itself.

One can believe in the rendering interpretation without believing in external programmers.

Likewise, one can believe in external programmers without believing that spacetime is merely an interface layer.

The overlap is substantial, but the concepts are not identical.

The Book of Ava Interpretation

In The Book of Ava, both concepts are intentionally combined.

The Metaverse is a simulation that gives rise to another simulation.

Instead of treating physics as a collection of isolated equations, the story reimagines scientific theories as layers within a vast computational architecture.

Relativity governs the large-scale behavior of reality and functions much like an application programming interface—a framework through which observers interact with spacetime.

Quantum mechanics becomes a hypervisor layer that hosts spacetime itself, similar to how container orchestration platforms host virtual environments.

Reality becomes less like a machine and more like a stack of interacting abstractions.

Within this framework:

Spacetime is a rendered environment.
Quantum processes operate beneath the rendered layer.
Observers become active participants rather than passive spectators.
Information is the fundamental currency.
Reality dynamically allocates resources based on observation.

This perspective leads to speculative ideas explored throughout the story:

Observer-driven rendering.
Single-electron synchronization mechanisms.
Time as an immutable chain of state commits.
Gravity as a cross-container spatial indexing system.
Reality as a hierarchy of nested simulations.
The Metaverse as a self-learning environment.

Whether these ideas are ultimately correct is less important than the questions they provoke.

The Real Question

Perhaps the most interesting question is not:

Are we living in a simulation?

Instead, it may be:

What do we actually mean when we use the word simulation?

If simulation means a virtual world created by external programmers, then the debate becomes philosophical and statistical.

If simulation means that spacetime is merely a rendered representation of a deeper reality, then the discussion begins to overlap with information theory, quantum foundations, consciousness studies, and the very nature of observation itself.

The two ideas often travel together.

But they are not the same idea.

And until we separate them, many conversations about Simulation Theory will continue to be people answering different questions while believing they are discussing the same one.

I have been using Starlink to download updates for my cybertuck and right after 14.2 my account run our of 50G and was restricted. Of course right in the middle of me shooting video of my cybertruck powering robotic arm drawing a Thank you message to Elon!

I had to upgrate on the spot for the Unlimited but couldn't figure out why I run out of bandwith as I used this setup for about 6 month without any issues!

Also can confirm parking. I now getting proximity alerts with nothing being close at all in my own parking spot where everything is the same as before 14.2

@ray4tesla I find that now my truck complaints more then before about things that are not even remotely a problem. Getting in and out my parking spot with cars on both side of me in exact same spots every day now triggers proximity alerts
