Amazon Sidewalk is one of the largest passive surveillance networks ever deployed in the United States, and most people don’t even know they’re part of it.

Here’s how it works.

Sidewalk quietly links millions of Amazon devices into a single nationwide mesh network. Ring doorbells, Echo speakers, Tile trackers, smart lights, and even older Kindles all share small amounts of your WiFi bandwidth with nearby strangers. Every device becomes a node.
Your home network becomes public infrastructure.

And Amazon becomes the owner of a privately operated, coast-to-coast tracking grid.

The security and privacy risks are enormous:

Police already request Ring footage without warrants. Sidewalk lets them map devices, track movement patterns, and identify areas of interest with unprecedented granularity. This is the “eye of Sauron” problem: a surveillance system built by corporations but exploited by the state.

Sidewalk extends the range of Bluetooth trackers by miles. A lost tag, a phone, or a “smart” device can now be tracked well outside your home. That’s great for finding keys. It’s catastrophic for civil liberties.

Sidewalk allows “Sidewalk-enabled” devices from other companies. Amazon will know where devices are, how they move, and who comes into proximity with whom. That is social graph data, the most valuable surveillance asset in existence.

Any large mesh network is a massive attack surface. A single exploit could expose millions of households. Amazon says it’s encrypted. The NSA also says everything is fine.

If your device is participating in a shared network, courts may eventually claim you “voluntarily” shared that data. That is how constitutional protections erode.

Devices enroll automatically. Many users don’t know the feature exists. Most never turned it on, Amazon did.

A corporate panopticon that law enforcement can tap without oversight, warrants, or constitutional friction.

If Americans do not draw a line on pervasive surveillance now, the line will be erased for them. Sidewalk is a steel fist of surveillance in a velvet glove of convenience, it is infrastructure for a society where privacy becomes impossible, and where the merger of Big Tech and Big Government sits above the citizen.

Libertarians warned this day would come.
