@tanita_tikaram Kershaw kindly sent me a postcard from Crouch End in '94, after I wrote to him about the killing of Khojali Osman and wounding of AbdelGadir Salim at the Musicians' Club in Omdurman.
I keep a copy of No Off Switch in a tin trunk in the Gambia.
Now I'll wave when I pass Rochdale.
Imagine coming back from a long day to this.
Exposed brick. Ochre concrete. A courtyard that pulls sunlight exactly where it’s needed. Three brick jali patterns filtering light and air through the facade.
No AC doing the heavy ventilation. The building handles it.
This is what a home should feel like.

In Omdurman we would spray our brick-floor veranda with a hose to be cooled by evaporation, and our zeer in the corner had the coolest wind-chilled water.
A great place for a siesta, incidentally.
